Why remote teams need workplace wellness more than ever before

2' reading

According to Buffer’s State of Remote Work 2020, remote workers struggle with communication; loneliness, and unplugging from work.

Remote working brings flexible hours and promises of a healthier work-life balance, but can also entail a myriad of new challenges for the growing companies of tomorrow.

Ill-defined boundaries and reduced social interaction can lead your people to feel disengaged towards their work, and this can easily go unnoticed in the realm of virtual workplaces.

Here’s how to lead with empathy and encourage remote workplace wellness:

  1. Create a culture of connection

Check-in with team members regularly to understand how they are doing and help them navigate through any issues.

Remember to show your appreciation for their work, so that they know that their efforts are noticed and feel inspired to keep moving forward.

Pro tip: Create ways for your team to engage with each other by scheduling virtual team-building activities.

  1. Encourage employees to set boundaries

Organise schedules so that your team members don’t feel like they aren’t drowning in work, are encouraged to take breaks as needed.

Let them know it’s okay to create breathing room for them to unplug. This will help them feel energised and clear-minded as they approach their work week.

  1. Give your people more ownership over their work

Today’s employees value agency with their work – micromanaging can backfire and dramatically impact the productivity of remote workers.

When your people feel that you trust their ability to get the work done, they’ll be even more motivated to give their absolute best.

  1. Design experiences your people will love.
