A candidate’s interview experience can make or break the way they perceive your company. With most growing companies hiring remotely, creating an inspiring online interview experience can leave applicants engaged, and can do wonders for employer branding.
Want to get started? Below, we’ve highlighted our tried-and-tested tips to carry out effective remote interviews at every touchpoint.
Before the interview
Communicate with candidates
Helping applicants feel more at ease can go a long way in creating a positive interview experience.
Give your interviewees an idea of how long the call will take, what programs and technology they will need access to, and what you will be evaluating.
When your interviewees come prepared, you’ll get the most out of your conversation!
Check your technology (then check it again!)
Keep interviews running smoothly by testing out your tech beforehand.
Ensure your video and audio are correctly set up before each call, and that you are in a quiet area with stable internet connection. Glitches can cause candidates to lose momentum (especially if they happen when they are in the middle of a story!).
During the interview
Keep it personal
Given that you won’t be meeting in person, it’s important to keep interviews friendly and ‘human’.
That means: don’t jump straight into the interview! Let your candidates settle into the conversation first, then let it unfold naturally. Today’s interviews may take place on screen, but that doesn’t rule out the need to build a connection first.
Highlight your company culture
Putting your company culture across through a screen is absolutely vital when hiring remotely!
As you move into the interview, talk openly about your mission, core values, as well as what a typical day is like for the role you candidates are interested in.
Painting a picture of how they can fit into your organization will fuel their excitement for the role!
Ask illuminating questions
Your question quality matters!
Ask questions that allow candidates to recount their most interesting stories: How has their career path been so far? What were their standout experiences, and how did they shape their current skill set? What do they envision for themselves, and why?
You’ll find that candidates will be excited to share this information, resulting in richer, more interesting conversations!
After your conversation
Keep candidates in the loop
Inform applicants about your hiring timeline as much as possible: what could delay it, and when you anticipate sharing the results.
If this is impossible, ensure that you treat potential hires with care. Who knows? Even if they don’t end up on the team, they might refer a friend (who could be the right fit!) to apply.
Always strive to leave the best impression on whomever you meet!
